Episode 1 of the RoleTalk Podcast is live: ‘The Problem with Progression’

The long-awaited first episode of the RoleTalk Podcast is now live!

It’s fair to say it’s been a labour of love, and I want to give a huge shoutout to Jasmine Granton who has been such a support with it, helping me to script and edit. A huge thanks also to James Marriot who I can honestly say is an absolute genius Podcast pro (not to mention extremely patient).

If you haven’t come across him before then I’d suggest you check him out because he is great for anybody who is looking to start their very own Podcast but are unsure where to begin. He offers a number of fairly priced packages for his hands-on training and support.

The problem with Progression in the Digital PR industry.

Demand for Digital PR had been slowly gathering pace even prior to the pandemic, but it’s fair to say that the events of the last three or so years have without a doubt accelerated the desire from brands to invest in it.

As somebody who worked as a Digital PR specialist for more than a decade, I couldn’t agree more that it is a channel that should be invested in. I have been on record saying that we should now be viewing it as a performance channel in its own right. But has the increase in popularity for it led to a growing culture for Digital PR focused businesses to prematurely promote and progress people in order to meet the sheer demand?

If agency owners and team leaders are honest with themselves, are they truly progressing these people, or are they actually moving them up too quickly without proper support, and in doing so, are they creating a pressure cooker or sink or swim situation?

I put this question (and others) to my first guests Bethanny Durham of Newcastle based agency, North, and Jasmine Granton of Evolved Search. The wider conversation that came from this, amongst other questions, is definitely food for thought. We touched upon the growing issues around salary demands from relatively junior individuals through to a lack of support for inexperienced team members that can often result from poorly planned growth.

I’ll leave you to have a listen, but please do let me know what you think!
